Dehydrated food

I'm currently eating dinner out of a plastic bag. It was a dehydrated food pack made by Backpacker's Pantry, and it's surprisingly good. While it won't be making home cooking or fancy restaurants obsolete anytime soon, it's actually better than what you might find at a cafeteria, and certainly better than MREs.

The downside is that it doesn't really weigh any less than an MRE, takes up more space, costs more (over twice as much, depending on the selection, though still a heck of a lot cheaper than eating out), and requires some preparation. MREs are ready to stuff in your mouth the instant you rip them open.

But wow, what you can do by just adding hot water...
