Night Test: 0.7" f/4.0 ISO1600 at 17mm, no flash

I'm demonstrating the limits of the stabilized lens in this shot, as it was shot by hand at 0.7s with an aperture of f/4.0. If you examine the card on top of the fire extinguisher on the right, you'll see the most marked blur. It helps that I'm shooting at 17.0mm (27mm equivalent on 35mm film), but on this lens, that creates other interesting problems: there is visible purple fringing on the tree branches by the light on the right, and although it's not particularly visible in the shot, there is significant barrel distortion as well.

On the other hand, it shows the kind of thing you can get away with with no tripod and no flash at ISO1600. The scene here is actually significantly brighter than it appears to the human eye. This shot was taken at about 10:45pm, and those lights are not particularly bright, for all the lens flare they caused.
