I have used 20 Maxtor 160G IDE drives for my biz.
For 3 years, I did RMAs about 15 times.
All kinds of problems like cliking. LED always on. can't find hdd. need format error messages. can't read block. you name it.
Every month I was RMA thing via maxtor.com

I have another 10 Western Digital 160G IDE.
No problem AT ALL for 3 years so far.

Recently I saw Seagate got Maxtor. WTF, Seagate got nut?

If you buy Maxtor for any reason. You're IDIOT. Period.
You'll lose data for sure sooner of later.

You're warned.

Can someone truly recommend a Large 300GB hard drive that doesn't fail? I've had nothing but headaches since I got mine. The p.o.s. (piece of shit), sorry for the French, make a video-game like sound, then a scatching sound. After 5 seconds, you hear it all over again and again. Please don't let anyone else buy this junk. This was my third and final drive that I had left over. I bought three 300gb drives at one time. (onetouch II 300gb)

I also have a onetouch II 300gb and had the same exact thing happen. Fortunately I was able to extract some of the files out of the damaged file system out with a file recovery program. Im ready to pitch this one. Just one thing after another. Once they get their first corrupted file its just downhill afterwards stay away from this shiiity company.

Hard drive recovery services

I've never actually used such a service myself, but they exist. Just Google for Hard Drive Recovery Service and follow up with each one that looks reputable.

Their services are expensive, but they are reputed to have very high success rates in that industry.

HELP! on file restoration with Maxtor

HELP! I am now a believer after reading these comments that MAXTOR sucks! I’ve had my OneTouch II 300GB for nearly a year now and it’s been working fine up until yesterday. My mistake was that I stored valuable original files on there such as home videos of family and kids, 140GB of MP3s, digital photos, etc. I did this so that my main PC’s drive didn’t have to be so cluttered with these personal files. I did nothing with the PC, but now it won’t recognize the drive at all. When I unglug and plug it back in, it makes the “dinging” noise letting me know that the USB port has detected a connection, but the drive is invisible. I looked under device manager under disk drives, and it is not listed. The blue light is steady and solid and the fan on the Maxtor is running and making noise… but I can’t access it. I’ve even tried switching cables and trying it on another PC… still no luck. Maxtor says they’ll send me a replacement but I’m SOL on my files, unless I pay them to recover it. BS! Can anybody please tell me how I can recover my files on this drive? PLEASE!! I don’t want to lose my kids valuable photos and videos - you can’t replace those! I don’t care if it voids the warranty… I just want my files back!! Please email me your advice at

yup,Yup,YUP!!! My friend's Maxtor DiamondMax Plus 9 160gb crashed last Friday (12/30) ... I checked Maxtor's warranty service site a few minutes ago (entered S/N, etc. ) results... "Out of warranty; Expiration Date: 12/28/2005" So, I'm wondering how the f*ck this company's drives know how to crap-out 2 days after the warranty expires (orig manufac date shows "17OCT2004")... do they achieve maximum customer frustration level with some kind of wierd time-out feature built into the internal chips (sic)... or does Maxtor use spy satelites to watch over their H-drives from space so they know when to send a FAIL signal to the drive at the most in-opportune time??? BTW, why can't this company build a drive that will last more than 14 months???? It doesn't help to have a 3 year warranty (or in this case less cause it's OEM), because the hassle of data loss or multiple drive back-ups to avoid that potential loss is not worth the trouble!!!! Had a 30gb Maxtor die less than a year ago--it was under warranty--but the data was still gone. I now have two Maxtor USB externals (one 70gb, one 200gb) and everything is now backed up on both. Anyway thanks all for your insight listed above... I'm looking forward to future confidence with Western Digital drives. HAVE A HAPPY NEW YEAR and wishes for no drive crashes!!!
