Maxtor drives suck

I'm replacing my third Maxtor hard drive in six months (not including the external USB drives that keep collapsing at work), and I have my eye on two others that might be degrading. One of those is only a scratch disk, so I'm not really worried about it, but the other may need to be replaced soon just for peace of mind.

The drives are a little over three years old now, I think, and have taken fairly light usage the entire time. I started moving to Seagate drives (with 5 year warranties) this year; the one I wanted for a replacement was out of stock when I went tonight, and I wasn't feeling like waiting any longer, so I've picked up a Western Digital instead.

I made an interesting discovery as well: the HPT370 chipset on my motherboard really doesn't like drives above 250GB. Fortunately, the main IDE controller seems to be fine.

I am thoroughly sick of dealing with substandard hardware. Every once in a while I get asked why I don't buy so-and-so a product, when it's cheaper than what I'm looking at. This sort of thing is why. Whenever I aim at the cheapest, I seem to get what I pay for.

i'm going to replace my maxto

i'm going to replace my maxtor hd for the second time... Sad
i swear maxtor sucks.

me too

I've had my 200 gig drive crash twice in about a month. I'm done with them.

word of warning.

the only hd's that ever had bad sectors on my use have been maxtors.. i replaced 2 or 3 maxtor drives (this year) with a lacie external usb drive and what a mistake it was. i've had it for 6 months or so, today it crashed too. i lost 300 gigs of valuable data. i opened the shit and there were two 160g maxtors inside! never buy maxtor, unless you like your date getting lost. if maxtor was a person and he was in front of me right now i would kick his ass.. total amount: 4 broken maxtors within a year or so. maxtor should learn how to make proper hd's or just quit the business. from now on i will only buy seagates..

Be careful about Seagates as well

The build quality is great... but they draw much more current than any other drive on the market, meaning that they can cause external RAID arrays, external USB enclosures, and weak PC power supplies to just fail unexpectedly.

I'm currently experimenting with Hitachi and Western Digital. Neither have had any problems so far, but it has only been about half a year.

Seagates are in second place for me

Seagates are good but I find western digitals faster. Both are better than those crappy maxtors.

Seagates let me down

I just got A 300GB seagate from futureshop.ca to replace my busted maxtor, it turnes out that the seagate drive failed after I installed windows. I really hate hard drives, so stressful. Next stop WESTERN DIGITAL.

you and me both man

I might not have been through as much as you but I lost 2 80 gig maxtors this year, and it really f's me over when I lose all that data. Never buying Maxtor again, either western digital or seagates from now on.

Maxtor can suck my dick

They just plain suck ass. Never, ever buy maxtor hdd. They will just cause you trouble. Been through 4 hdd in a year, thats about $450 down the drain to those stupid fags at maxtor. zippppp, zipppppp! (disk read error, cannot load os) is all you'll see and hear from those dumbass pricks at maxtor. (sorry for the lauguage, just expressing myself)

Maxtors are the devil

been through so much stress because of these drives, take my advice and don't buy them, wast of time and money. western digitals are the best.

Does it ever end

You can't even begin to imagin the anger these drives have givin me. error after error after error. bad sectors, wierd sounds, slow after repairs. this is the end to maxtor, here comes western digital.

MAXTOR DRIVES SUCK

I have replaced 6 drives to get 3 working that's a 200% fail rate!!!!
Plus they have crashed a dosen times each. before and after.

I NO LONGER CAN TRUST ANY DATA ON MAXTOR.
DON'T BUY MAXTOR

Me neither

They are and emberasment to the computing industry. take it from me, Testing these HDD is my job and maxtors are the cheapest peice of crap on the market. Just open one up and look for yourself. onetime I found tape on the hand spindle Banging your head against a wall

WTF F F F F F F F MAX.. DIXASTOR!!!!!!!!!!

I have used 20 Maxtor 160G IDE drives for my biz.
For 3 years, I did RMAs about 15 times.
All kinds of problems like cliking. LED always on. can't find hdd. need format error messages. can't read block. you name it.
Every month I was RMA thing via maxtor.com

I have another 10 Western Digital 160G IDE.
No problem AT ALL for 3 years so far.

Recently I saw Seagate got Maxtor. WTF, Seagate got nut?

If you buy Maxtor for any reason. You're IDIOT. Period.
You'll lose data for sure sooner of later.

You're warned.

MAXTOR is one of the WORST!

Maxtor was first recommended by my friend, at first, it was just fine. Later on when I bought the MAXTOR 200 G harddisks, it failed me badly. I have lost about 200 Giga of files because of MAXTOR's imbecility. MAXTOR is the stupidest harddrive manufacturer in the world! Please tell all of your friends that if they ever want to buy harddisk , don't ever try MAXTOR!

U guys R right!!!

yup,Yup,YUP!!! My friend's Maxtor DiamondMax Plus 9 160gb crashed last Friday (12/30) ... I checked Maxtor's warranty service site a few minutes ago (entered S/N, etc. ) results... "Out of warranty; Expiration Date: 12/28/2005" So, I'm wondering how the f*ck this company's drives know how to crap-out 2 days after the warranty expires (orig manufac date shows "17OCT2004")... do they achieve maximum customer frustration level with some kind of wierd time-out feature built into the internal chips (sic)... or does Maxtor use spy satelites to watch over their H-drives from space so they know when to send a FAIL signal to the drive at the most in-opportune time??? BTW, why can't this company build a drive that will last more than 14 months???? It doesn't help to have a 3 year warranty (or in this case less cause it's OEM), because the hassle of data loss or multiple drive back-ups to avoid that potential loss is not worth the trouble!!!! Had a 30gb Maxtor die less than a year ago--it was under warranty--but the data was still gone. I now have two Maxtor USB externals (one 70gb, one 200gb) and everything is now backed up on both. Anyway thanks all for your insight listed above... I'm looking forward to future confidence with Western Digital drives. HAVE A HAPPY NEW YEAR and wishes for no drive crashes!!!

HELP! on file restoration with Maxtor

HELP! I am now a believer after reading these comments that MAXTOR sucks! I’ve had my OneTouch II 300GB for nearly a year now and it’s been working fine up until yesterday. My mistake was that I stored valuable original files on there such as home videos of family and kids, 140GB of MP3s, digital photos, etc. I did this so that my main PC’s drive didn’t have to be so cluttered with these personal files. I did nothing with the PC, but now it won’t recognize the drive at all. When I unglug and plug it back in, it makes the “dinging” noise letting me know that the USB port has detected a connection, but the drive is invisible. I looked under device manager under disk drives, and it is not listed. The blue light is steady and solid and the fan on the Maxtor is running and making noise… but I can’t access it. I’ve even tried switching cables and trying it on another PC… still no luck. Maxtor says they’ll send me a replacement but I’m SOL on my files, unless I pay them to recover it. BS! Can anybody please tell me how I can recover my files on this drive? PLEASE!! I don’t want to lose my kids valuable photos and videos - you can’t replace those! I don’t care if it voids the warranty… I just want my files back!! Please email me your advice at

Hard drive recovery services

I've never actually used such a service myself, but they exist. Just Google for Hard Drive Recovery Service and follow up with each one that looks reputable.

Their services are expensive, but they are reputed to have very high success rates in that industry.

maxtor sucks

I also have a onetouch II 300gb and had the same exact thing happen. Fortunately I was able to extract some of the files out of the damaged file system out with a file recovery program. Im ready to pitch this one. Just one thing after another. Once they get their first corrupted file its just downhill afterwards stay away from this shiiity company.

Maxtor indeed SUCKS!

Can someone truly recommend a Large 300GB hard drive that doesn't fail? I've had nothing but headaches since I got mine. The p.o.s. (piece of shit), sorry for the French, make a video-game like sound, then a scatching sound. After 5 seconds, you hear it all over again and again. Please don't let anyone else buy this junk. This was my third and final drive that I had left over. I bought three 300gb drives at one time. (onetouch II 300gb)

They suck

i bought a 40 gb western digital but i went to get a os install and they stole my WD and put in a maxtor like wtf and the 1 year later the maxtor just wont stay on and the fan i use to cool the peices of shit moves the power cable and then the drive turns off and it is the same with my 15gb and that one has no fan and i turns off just be stepping to close to it.

ps MAXTOR SUCKS

From Maxtor hater

Maxtor sucks

and after looking at my maxtor 40 gb i realized there was 2 stickers and i took one off and it was relabled with a newer manufacture date like wtf.
